HomeSituationsThe inner world

An old reproach keeps replaying in your head.

Take this situation apart. Each piece goes in one box: yours, or not yours. There is no third box, and almost nothing falls in one piece.

Yours
  • Chewing it over or letting it play out.Rumination feels like processing but is the opposite: every round grinds the track deeper. Notice it, name it, “there it is again”, and bring your attention back to what lies in front of you. Bringing it back a hundred times is not failure; it is the exercise itself.
  • The sentence you read out to yourself after every round. The surfacing is not chosen, but the conviction that follows it is: you pronounce it anew each time, with yourself as suspect, prosecutor and judge. The past was sentenced long ago. Retrials are not compulsory.
Not yours
  • That the reproach keeps surfacing.Memory has its own playlist and asks no permission. The surfacing itself is a first movement; it happens to you, even after years.
The reasoning. The playlist is not yours; the play button is. There is nothing more to win here, and that is enough.
