On social media everyone seems to have life more together than you.

Take this situation apart. Each piece goes in one box: yours, or not yours. There is no third box, and almost nothing falls in one piece.

Yours
  • How long you look and whom you follow.Comparing your backstage with somebody else’s front is a contest lost by everyone who enters it. The button to stop is not in the app; it is in your thumb.
Not yours
  • What others show.Their shop window, their best ten seconds, their holiday photo without the argument before it: that is their display case, and display cases show no stockroom. This part is not even accurate.
  • That the feed never ends. There is no final post after which it is finished; the stream is designed to keep streaming, by people whose job that is. Waiting for a bottom is waiting for something that was left out.
The reasoning. Their shop window stays lit day and night; whether you keep standing in front of it is the only question that counts.
